Many of the women seen in boxing today were unable to pursue
the sport from a young age (pause). Either due to a (emphasise) serious lack of
opportunities, or the fact that it was actually illegal for women to box until
1996 and the ABA didn’t sanction its first competition for women until 1997.
Society has typically viewed boxing as a (emphasise) purely masculine
sport. This has made many people, including females uncomfortable with seeing
women box.
There has been a nationwide movement to get women involved in
sport. Campaigns like ‘This Girl Can’ have been created to try to inspire and
take the fear away from women being involved in sport.
